Extending WID To Train Mechanical Engineering GTAs To Evaluate Student

Posted by jakobsenbojsen88fkyada on Comments comments (0)

Beyond first-year composition, the typical undergraduate mechanical engineering curriculum provides few opportunities to develop writing skills without a concerted effort by faculty to incorporate writing into their courses. One underutilized path for BSME students to strengthen those skills is the required sequence of laboratory courses, where students write several lab reports, evaluated by graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), many of whom speak English as a second language. Historically, engineering GTAs have not been trained in evaluating student writing in a way that helps students improve their technical communication skills, a method known as formative assessment. Formative assessment can be a key part of the learning process in that a student produces a product on which an evaluator provides feedback and the student learns from the feedback, “forming” new knowledge (Yorke, 2003, pp. 478-479). Such assessment can be informal (feedback on drafts, immediate responses to student questions or presentations in class) or formal (graded work such as lab reports that GTAs evaluate and return to the students with feedback the students are expected to incorporate into future assignments).

This paper details a comprehensive research study of a GTA training program implemented in a large mechanical engineering department at a small Midwestern public “high research activity” university. Situated within the field of Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Disciplines, the training program was developed to meet the unique needs of the department’s GTAs and address perceived deficiencies in undergraduate student technical writing by teaching best practices in writing evaluation. In follow-up interviews after completing the program, the majority of GTAs said the training helped them provide higher quality feedback and improve their own writing because they were more aware of issues such as audience and logical flow. The survey showed the undergraduate students found the set of lab report guidelines, developed as part of the program and applying to all three courses, and the corresponding detailed rubric helped them better understand report requirements and expectations. The survey also showed that there was still some inconsistency in grading from GTA to GTA in one course in particular, but that many GTAs were providing detailed feedback that helped students learn. The summative assessment showed improvement in four of five categories measured in the university’s written communication learning goal rubric: Organization and Conventions, Content Development, Sources and Evidence, and Control Syntax and Mechanics. No improvement was shown in Context and Purpose for Writing. Feedback from GTAs and students played an important role in a curriculum redesign that occurred in parallel with the implementation of this training program. This research is relevant to undergraduate engineering programs seeking to improve the communication skills of their undergraduate students. The training program used limited staff/faculty resources to extend the knowledge and skills of its GTAs and reach all its undergraduate students through existing required courses.

The workers in United Airlines have related in the survey results that there is not ample encouragement and support from the airline management, contributing to the worker’s low level of productivity. The need for people to feel positive about themselves is fundamental, as shown clearly from ordinary experience, as well as from applied research (1984). Recognition makes employees feel valued and appreciated, it contributes to higher employee morale, increases organizational productivity, and can aid in recruitment and retention (‘). The Baudville site gave five pointers to inspire management buy-in: (1) Tell them why it is important; (2) Have a recognition plan to present; (3) Ask for commitment; (4) Give them specific action steps; and (5) Provide recognition materials and tools to get started (2001). These suggestions may help in convincing the management that there is a need for employee recognition, especially in the case of United Airlines, where employee morale is low that measures for a better recognition system is imperative if the management wants to increase the level of employee productivity which would ultimately aid in getting out of the United financial crisis. https://essayfreelancewriters.com/blog/how-to-write-a-lab-report/ has been shown to have an effect on performance and stress. ‘It is a common belief that heavy workloads lead to elevated stress and reduced efficiency. Unfortunately, the relation between workload and stress (as well as workload and performance) has received scant attention in the literature. What few studies do exist tends to use non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational methods. One influential model is Karasek job strain model. Tests of this model using correlational methodology have shown that the combination of low decision latitude and high job demands were associated with mental strain and job dissatisfaction and cardiovascular disease’ (1999). Downsizing was one of the strategies adopted by United to cut costs in the face of the financial crises. As there have been massive lay-offs in the recent history of United, the survivors of this downsizing have shouldered the responsibility of those who were unfortunate enough to be laid-off. The distribution of workload is therefore not as balanced as before. Fewer people with the same amount of work to do have further affected the morale of United workers. A serious look at devising approaches in order to justly allocate work among the remaining United employees is deemed important by respondents to the survey.

The contingency theory developed by Fred Fiedler is based on efforts to match leadership styles to the task situation. This theory may be adopted by the United management in distributing workload to the present employees of the carrier. As cited in described leader situations according to three task elements: leader-member relations, task structure, and position power. Leader-member relations may be good or bad. Tasks may be structured or unstructured. Leaders may have high or low position power. He suggested that these factors created a continuum of situations ranging from highly favorable to leadership, to highly unfavorable to leadership. Leaders with high task orientations, such as authoritarian or directive styles of leadership, are more successful when the situations are either very favorable or very unfavorable to the leader. The middle ranges of somewhat favorable, according to Fiedler, are best matched to a leader with a more relationally orientated style, such as is often found in democratic leadership styles’ (2003). During times of crisis, this contingency theory proves useful in that a shift in the leadership style may be called for under circumstances that are not normally encountered by the company.

In click this link , my partner and I observed the behavior of pill bugs. Our objective was to determine what type of environment they prefer living in. We did this by collecting 10 pill bugs and placing them in what is a called a choice chamber, a "tool" that allowed the pill bugs to move freely and choose between two different environments. Each side of the chamber had something different done to it, creating two different "environments." By recording the number of pill bugs on each side every so often, we were able to observe and determine which environment the pill bugs preferred. Behavior can be defined as the way an animal or person responds to a certain situation. For an animal, behavior is the way it interacts with other animals, with other living beings, and with the environment. Animal behavior explores how animals find and defend resources, avoid predators, choose mates, reproduce, and care for their young. Questions about animal behavior fall into four different categories, two of them being proximate issues and ultimate issues. For help with essay, please contact https://essayfreelancewriters.com.

A proximate question asks how an animal knows to behave in a certain way, and an ultimate question asks why an animal behaves in a certain way. Something very common in animal behavior is fixed action pattern. In other words, they're instincts. An animal is triggered by a specific stimulus, causing it to go through a routine every time. An example of a fixed action pattern is the egg rolling behavior of a Greylag Goose. When a goose's egg rolls out of the nest, the goose instinctively begins to roll the egg back to the nest using a repeated movement with her beak and neck. If, while the goose is still rolling the egg back to the nest, the egg rolls away or someone takes it away, the goose will continue the movements without the egg until she has gotten back to the nest. The, the goose will relocate the egg and start again.

Imprinting is another part of animal behavior, and no it's not how when Jacob imprinted on Bella's daughter (yes, I read Twilight, don't judge me). It is when a young animal comes to recognize another animal, person, or thing as a parent. For young geese, the proximate cause for them following and imprinting on their mother is that during an early stage in their lives, the young geese see their mother moving away from them and calling them, so they instinctively follow. The ultimate cause is that geese that follow and imprint on their mother receive more care and learn more necessary skills; therefore, they have a greater chance of surviving than those geese that do not follow their mother. Orientation behaviors, an element of animal behavior, place the animal in its most favorable environment. These behaviors include movements known as taxis and kenisis. In taxis, the animal moves toward or away from a stimulus, such as algae moves towards the directional stimulus of light in positive phototaxis as it needs light to photosynthesis. Taxis often occurs when the stimulus is light, heat, sound, or chemicals.

Kinesis, on the other hand, is a random movement that does not result in orientation with respect to a stimulus. In other words, when an organism experiences unpleasant stimulus, they increase random movement in order to find an area of more pleasant stimulus. For example, when woodlice are in light, dry conditions (unpleasant), they increase random movement so that they may increase the chance of them finding dark, moist conditions. Two learning behaviors for animals are classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Conditioning involves learning associations between events that occur in an organism's environment. Classical conditioning is a type of learning which forms an association between two stimuli. Operant conditioning is a type of learning that forms an association between a behavior and a consequence. While classical conditioning is passive on the part of the learner, operant conditioning relies on the learner to actively participate in the learning process. An experiment was done with a dog on classical conditioning by a Russian scientist known as Ivan Pavlov.

In check here analyze the London Business School’s MBA admissions essay questions for the Class of 2016. Thinking about London Business School reminds me of the strength of the alumni network, the quality of its academic research, its core competencies in finance and international business, the intensity of its campus community, and the emphasis that LBS puts on active student involvement within that community. For my suggestions on how to prepare for LBS interviews, please see here. I have worked with a number of clients admitted to LBS. I had a total of 16 admitted since 2008 as well as prior clients from 2001-2007. You can find testimonials from some of them here. I do suggest reviewing the interviews I have conducted with my former clients from the Classes of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. . They each provide their own unique perspective on LBS. You get the MBA Essays here. LBS has been altering its questions almost every year. 1. What do you want LBS to know about you that would positively impact your chances for admission?

2. What major positive aspects of your life have not been effectively INTERPRETED to the admissions committee in other parts of the application? 3. If you were going to tell admissions 1-3 things about you that would not be obvious from rest of the application, what would they be? Why should LBS care? 4. What could you discuss about yourself that you think would really help admissions understand you and want to admit you? “You are required to add the word count at the end of each question. Fully explore the LBS website, get in touch with alums, and even contact students. The LBS Japanese student website is ideal for Japanese applicants. Do whatever it takes to become sufficiently informed about the school. Attend events if you can and even better, go visit if that is possible. The school has strengths beyond finance, entrepreneurship, and international business, so explore them. Figure out specifically what parts of the program will most effectively assist you in succeeding at your post-MBA plan. What will your future look like after completing your MBA (500 words)? This question is focused specifically on your career post-MBA. You should certainly explain why you need MBA in order to show how LBS will help achieve your post-MBA goal, but the real focus is on discussing that post-MBA future. In Questions 2 and 3 you have the opportunity to discuss LBS, so don’t feel like you need to do too much of that here. Provide a specific post-MBA short-term plan. What industry, function, and even company do want to work for? This data has been done by Essay Writers.

LBS values clarity in terms of career objectives. Assume the realism of your post-MBA plans will be seriously scrutinized by the admissions office. While being ambitious is important, it surely needs to be the case that admissions should feel that you are someone they should take a bet on admitting because your post-MBA prospects are well-thought out. They know you may change your plans, but at least show you can put together a viable plan for your post-MBA future. Provide a clear longer-term vision. This might be stated in terms of a specific job, but also could be stated in terms of an overall mission. You can be a more vague here than what you discuss in the short-term. Make sure you explain what motivates you. Since LBS’ question is focused on the future, some applicants may very well find themselves writing in great detail about what they hope their long-term future will look like.

Effects Of A Computer-assisted Argument Map Learning Strategy On Sixth-grade Students’ Argumentative Essay Reading Comprehension

Numerous studies have proved that graphic strategies, such as graphic organization and concept mapping, can facilitate improving reading comprehension. However, the question as to what graphic strategies can improve argumentative essay reading comprehension ability is not yet resolved. To determine whether graphic strategies can improve students’ reading comprehension ability, we designed a computer-aided argumentative essay reading system that can construct graphic strategies. In the designed system, three approaches, namely a traditional teaching approach without graphic strategies, concept mapping, and argument mapping, are created for determining the effects of graphic strategies on students’ argumentative essay reading comprehension ability. In addition, the proposed argument mapping system provides a function for helping students identify three key argumentative essay elements, namely claims, reasons, and evidence, to enable them to construct an argument map with no burden. The designed system can help students learn how to read argumentative essays easily, improving their reading comprehension ability. The experimental results from 373 sixth graders showed that the argument mapping method enhanced students’ argumentative essay reading comprehension ability compared with traditional and concept mapping approaches.

So, who better to do that than their own customer? You see, before my Enlightenment Literature class, I would have never considered letting someone else write my paper for me - I’m more of a math student, anyway, so essays and dissertations were never that big of a deal. Unfortunately, I had three finals, a huge soccer game and a research project in molecular chemistry all due the same week as my paper. With so much on my plate, I felt I had no choice but to ask someone more educated on Enlightenment Literature to write my paper . Soon, though, PaperWritten.com’s outstanding reputation allowed me to choose them to write my paper. I called their 24/7 customer service to get the basic run-through of the writing process when I asked them to write my paper for me - after all, I had never done this before. A friendly assistant told me exactly how it would work - I could pick my own writer, communicate with them throughout the assignment, and receive the final paper via delivery. It sounded too easy to be true - how could I know it was that painless for someone else to write my paper for me? The woman assured me it was the truth, and took my Enlightenment Literature paper to the writer of my choosing. Luckily, everything the customer support woman had told me was true. I immediately began communicating with the writer, who assured me that though he wanted to write my paper for me, he wanted it also to be up to my standards. I made sure he knew exactly what I wanted, even going so far as to review drafts and paper sections.

When he promised to both write my paper and provide friendly assistance, he wasn’t kidding! It was also nice to talk to actually talk to a writer - the person spoke perfect, natural English, and when he got to write my paper for me, that carried over into the grammar and structure of the piece. All I can say is “WOW! ”. Jack, you’ve really impressed me with this admission letter. Hope the committee will be impressed too. Will let you know how it goes. If, for any reason, the writers write my paper and it turns out insufficient, incorrect or of poor-quality, they will give a free revision. Luckily, I didn’t need to take them up on the offer; the writer that decided to write my paper for me did an amazing job. He wrote the entire thing from scratch - a 100% original paper that looked as though it came directly from me! I don’t know how they did it, but they managed to write my paper excellently and in record time. I no longer had the burden of the Enlightenment Literature assignment on my shoulders. Plus, when they promised to write my paper in no time at all, they meant! I got the paper back so fast, I still wasn’t finished with half of my other end-of-term assignments (I even considered sending them another project). I’ve never known anyone since (and I have tried a few other companies) to write my paper in such a short time, but still maintain intensely high quality content. The narrative “The Story of an Hour” by the American writer Kate Chopin reflects the social position of women at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. In that epoch, women were greatly oppressed by men. They were considered to be born only for marriage but they did not have any choice even in that sphere. Most marriages were contracted regarding financial perspectives of the future family. Sometimes marriages were just a good bargain of two heads of family, and while men had the opportunity to choose, women had to be mute. Besides, they were deprived of any rights, they had to submit to men and if they dared to resist, it was considered inconceivable. Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on The Story of an Hour Essay for You! The main character of the story, Mrs. Millard, has a heart disease. Therefore, her relatives, sister Josephine and her husband’s friend Richard, do not know how to tell her the tragic news.

Her husband Mr. Millard died in a train accident. When finally they find the appropriate words to inform Mrs. Millard, she locks herself up in her room and weeps. However, these tears are caused more by shock than by grief. To the readers’ astonishment soon she shows the feelings quite unexpected in that situation. She is excited and we can even say happy. She feels free and independent. She sees life around her in an absolutely different way: “The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In Check it out below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves”(Chopin 127). We are shocked by such woman’s reaction and do not understand it. The author deliberately uses such imagery to convey the atmosphere reigning around her. To intensify the impression Kate Chopin uses the simile: “She carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory” (Chopin 130). All these stylistic devices help readers to feel the contrast of the situation and the character’s reaction to it. This data was generated with https://essayfreelancewriters.comversion.

Mrs. Millard’s happiness is so strong that when she finds out that her husband is alive and sees him at home, her heart fails. The readers know the reason of her death while all the characters of the story think it is a huge shock and joy that killed her. It surprises how Kate Chopin manages to convey the suffering of all women of that time in a short narrative that describes events of one hour. She presents great and vital problems of human relationship, particularly between a husband and a wife, by the example of a woman who lived under the total control of her husband and could feel free only after his death. Her excitement about her husband’s death makes us ponder over their relations - how much the woman should have been oppressed by her husband that his death became a happy event for her. The very title of the story highlights the idea that just one hour can change all life and even lead to death. In my opinion, the main theme of Kate Chopin’s story is the impossibility of self-development for women who are under the overall control of their husbands. They are unable to change the situation and suffer silently. The tragedy of the particular situation emphasizes the horrible situation in the whole society of the nineteenth century. She states in her narrative that she learned that words are “no good” at expressing what they aim to(Faulkner, page 73). The theme of words without action is present throughout the story in the face of the two brothers Darl and Jewel as well as in Anse who does not do, but rater talks. This tendency is most vividly expressed by his idle standing by the river when the carriage and mules along with his wife’s coffin tip over. He is there rather to instruct his sons on what to do rather than to offer a helping hand. This is in sharp contrast with Jewel’s constant activity. He is always on the move and even managed to earn money for his very own horse without letting anyone know. The funeral procession of Addie Bundren is a journey of epic proportions for the family, but its outcome and nature remind us more of an ironic account of life’s ill fortune and people’s spiteful nature, so it might be more appropriate to call the journey a mock epic one.
